Southeast Region Fishing Information

Little has changed, and the fishing is excellent in the Southeast Region. But in many areas fishing is best in the cooler parts of the day, early and late.
The Upper Blackfoot River opened for catch-and-release fishing for cutthroat trout on July 1. The cutthroat spawning run out of the reservoir was about 540 cutthroat trout – that’s the biggest run since 2003 and should provide for some exciting fishing this year. The river is running high and cloudy.
The best access is on Idaho Fish and Game’s Blackfoot River Wildlife Management Area about 30 miles above the reservoir.
American Falls Reservoir is slow but the place to go to catch a rainbow trout over 10 pounds. Anglers also are catching smallmouth bass and trout in the Snake River below the American Falls Dam.
Other hotspots for bass are at Gifford Springs and in the rip-rap at Sportsman’s Park near Aberdeen.
Chesterfield Reservoir is hot. Catch rates have picked up with lots of 13- to 14-inch fish are being caught with the occasional fish over 18 inches being caught. Anglers are using dark leeches and streamers in the upper bay.
Most of the smaller lakes are good for bluegill and crappie, and the rivers and streams good for trout. Twin Lakes still is the place for bluegill and crappie.
To catch the big bass in Weston Creek Reservoir anglers have to get down below the little ones. This is a no-motors reservoir.
Fishing is good in Twenty-four Mile Reservoir with damsel flies and red midges. In Springfield Reservoir damsel and midges are working well.
Anglers report good results in Daniels Reservoir by the dead trees and the far side bay. Hawkins Reservoir also is fishing well. The cutthroat trout stocked a few years ago are husky and fun to catch, with reports of fish bigger than should be there in the willows and weeds.
In both these reservoirs, damsel patterns, and Green Apple and Halloweens are working well.
The upper Portneuf River is high and clear, producing a few nice trout. Some anglers are report good results with CDC caddis, pale morning duns, Shop-Vac nymphs, especially during the cooler parts of the day.
The lower Blackfoot River is running cloudy.
And on the Fort Hall Reservation pale morning duns are hatching about 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Salmon Region Fishing Information

The summer temperatures have turned the fishing on near Challis. The trout fishing at Mosquito Flats Reservoir and Bayhorse Lake has slowed a little bit because the fish are going deeper with the warmer weather; however worms and bobbers are working well. Fly fishing is really coming on and as the water drops, it keeps getting better. Mackay Reservoir is good for trolling deep.
The Salmon River is near normal flows now and the trout fishing is excellent. Anglers are catching lots of fish at the kid's ponds and lakes on the valley floor. And the high mountain lakes are open and also fishing well.
The lake fishing is good at recently stocked Wallace and Meadow Lakes. The public sections of the Lemhi River are extremely good with anglers reporting excellent results with both fly and spinning rods. Williams Lake is fishing well with top water flies, eggs and worms. Hayden Ponds near Lemhi report good fishing but the water is very mossy and will probably remain that way until cool fall weather.

Twists & Turns At ICAST

As expected, there were plenty of new products to be examined when the doors opened for the 2008 edition of ICAST in the Las Vegas Convention Center yesterday, but there were also a few surprises. The ESPN press conference announcing their 2009 and 2010 events may have provided the biggest news item for the dozens of media types prowling the halls, press conferences and meeting rooms. There, BASS Vice President and General Manager Tom Ricks announced that, effective next year, the Elite Series will no longer have co-anglers, although fishing fans will continue to have the opportunity to ride along with the pros. The reaction from the Elite series anglers was anything but uniform, with Greg Hackney being quoted as saying it was, simply "the greatest thing ever to happen to professional fishing" others were pleased at the decision, but a bit more reticent in their appraisals. For manufacturers, however, it wasn't all good news. Eric Naig of Pure Fishing said the decision was "disappointing" but understood the decision despite the potential to prevent manufacturers "growing their pyramid of influence". Officials say the very competitive nature of the Elite series is behind the decision. For some time, anglers have complained that while they depend on their performance for their livelihood, the co-anglers were not always sensitive to that fact.Co-anglers will remain on the Bassmaster Opens and "other Bass events". There's another ESPN/BASS press conference scheduled for this afternoon, at that one, we're hearing there will be an announcement of a "saltwater series" under the ESPN/BASS umbrella. We'll keep you posted on that one. Elsewhere on the show floor, the media and buyers were busily casting their votes for the best products of 2008. It seems there are still small companies giving the mega-companies runs for their innovative money, but even while the voting was underway, longtime ICAST attendees could be heard voicing their feeling that the industry was suffering because of the rapid consolidation of brands and categories.Nothing of the sort was heard from the lone British company at ICAST. Simon Poneroy, founder of Pallatrax, said he was deeply appreciative of the American fishing market. "In Britain," he said, "we don't have the tremendous variety of fishing that is taken for granted in America."Neither does Britain or any of the European Union countries have the option of using lead for sinkers. That's why Pomeroy introduced his "Stonz" sinker system there just over three years ago - using precisely weighed stones (stonz is the legally protectable term) as fishing weights. The Stonz system is up for a Product of the Year, but it looked to me like his innovative tackle setups for bottom fishing may be products that will catch on with anyone fishing for bottom-feeders. He calls them "Stumpy Rigs" - a combination of leader, whisker line (to which the bait is fastened and floats above the sinker and hook) and octopus/circle style hook. Bottom species inhale the bait, and when they go to spit it out, the hook sets as the motion to expel the bait causes the octopus/circle to set more firmly. But not all internationals at ICAST are being greeted so warmly. I spoke with the very angry owner of one American bait company who says, frankly, he's more than fed up with knockoffs. Like-minded manufacturers, I'm hearing, are quietly resurrecting conversations about an adversarial organization being formed for the purpose of moving against blatant copycats. "They basically rip off the development, research and brand identity we build," one manufacturer who didn't want to be identified by name said, "then we watch our business die because some retailers just don't have any problem selling knockoffs."You read it here first. And the American Sportfishing Association, the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation have come up with a list of the ten influential fishing products over the past 75 years that have helped make fishing the sport it is today. The final top ten list spans six categories, including accessories, electronics, lines, lures, reels and rods:Original Floater Minnow (1936) remains one of the most successful and widely copied hard lures in sportfishing's history.Original and current manufacturer: RapalaSpring loaded Bobber (1947) made suspending a baited hook at a desired depth simpler and easier. Even today this item is virtually in every angler's tackle box.Original manufacturer: Nibble NabberCurrent: Various companies

BASS ANNOUNCES 2009 & 2010 BASSMASTER ELITE SERIES SCHEDULES, DROPS CO-ANGLERS

Yesterday, in Las Vegas at ICAST, BASS announced its Bassmaster Elite Series tournament schedule for the next two seasons, 2009 and 2010. In 2009, the most prominent tournament trail in the world will make a stop for the first time in Michigan, home of three-time Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo. The 2010 schedule kicks off with a West Coast tour as the Elite pros again visit the California Delta and California's Clear Lake."This is the first time BASS has simultaneously released two years of Elite Series schedules. This reaffirms our commitment to the anglers, fans and sponsors," said Tom Ricks, vice president and general manager, BASS. "We appreciate the support of our outstanding communities to deliver these top-notch schedules."In February, BASS also announced the dates for the next three Bassmaster Classics: February 20-22, 2009, on the Red River out of Shreveport-Bossier City, Louisiana; February 19-21, 2010, out of Birmingham, Alabama; and February 18-20, 2011, out of New Orleans. As with past years, each Elite-level event will receive one hour of television coverage on ESPN2's The Bassmasters, which airs Saturdays at 9 a.m. ET. ESPN2 will kick off the Bassmaster Elite Series season with 11 hours of programming through three days devoted to the 2009 Bassmaster Classic.Additionally, Bassmaster.com and ESPNOutdoors.com will provide fishing fans with real-time leaderboards, streaming footage from weigh-ins, photo galleries and analysis at all Elite events throughout each season, accompanied by award-winning coverage by Bassmaster Magazine and BASS Times.Along with the schedule, BASS announced today that co-anglers will be removed from Elite Series competitions starting in 2009. Bass fishing fans will continue to have the opportunity to ride along with the pros. This move further elevates the status of the Elite Series events and professional fishing. The program details will be posted on Bassmaster.com at a later date.Co-anglers will continue to compete in Bassmaster Opens - the ultimate proving ground on the way to the Elite Series - as well as other BASS events. Considering the success of the Open format, BASS also established today the addition of another Open division, the Bassmaster Northern Opens. Qualifying structures and the complete Open schedule will be released in the near future."BASS has always been about serving our anglers and fans by providing opportunities to compete in the highest levels of tournament bass fishing," Ricks said. "This is the logical evolution and enhancement of the Elite Series to extend brand-building opportunities for the sport."The 2009 season gets rolling on the familiar Lake Amistad, where the winning Elite pro has weighed in an average of 25 pounds per day in the past two years' tournaments. The reservoir will host the Battle on the Border, March 12-15 in Del Rio, Texas. In 2008, Texas' Todd Faircloth rallied from 10th place on the final day of competition to win the Battle on the Border with an overall weight of 76 pounds, 15 ounces. From Texas the series heads to Russellville, Ark., for the March 26-29 event on Lake Dardanelle. In 2007, Boyd Duckett of Demopolis, Ala., then the reigning Bassmaster Classic champion, won the last BASS event on the northwestern Arkansas reservoir with a four-day total of 55 pounds, 9 ounces.Next, the Elite pros circle back to Alabama, the birthplace of BASS. If 2008 was any indication, the April 2-5 Dixie Duel on Wheeler Lake out of Decatur is sure to be loaded with excitement. The last Elite event there, just last month, became a slugfest. After a few days of trash-talking and nail biting, second-year Elite pro Jeremy Starks beat the legendary Kevin VanDam by a mere 8 ounces.Hosting its fourth BASS tournament April 23-26, Virginia's Smith Mountain Lake is a scenic 20,600-acre lake that is 40 miles long and features more than 500 miles of shoreline nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 2007, Casey Ashley of Donalds, S.C., then a rookie, claimed his first victory as an Elite pro at Smith Mountain with a four-day total of 57 pounds, 3 ounces. To start a two-week tour of Alabama, the circuit next stops at Lake Guntersville, May 7-10 out of Guntersville, Ala. The last time the Elites visited Guntersville, a familiar face smiled under the weight of a hoisted 2007 Southern Challenge trophy. Kevin VanDam earned his 11th BASS career victory, besting the second-place finisher, Saint Louis' Mark Tucker, by more than 6 pounds with a four-day total of 66 pounds, 3 ounces. From Guntersville the Elites travel to the smallmouth haven of Pickwick Lake and Florence, Ala., for the May 14-17 event. The 47,500-acre Tennessee River impoundment is primarily a flooded river with points, gravel bars, stump flats, islands and small tributaries. It last hosted a BASS event in 2005.After the Elite Series' second tour of Alabama, the trail heads to Paris, Tenn., for the June 3-6 Tennessee Triumph on Kentucky Lake. With four tournaments to go in 2008, Kentucky Lake was the site of a thrilling battle between titans: four-time Bassmaster Classic winner Rick Clunn and VanDam, a three-time Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year. It went down to the wire as VanDam claimed his 14th career BASS victory with an overall weight of 84 pounds, 13 ounces.Starting the homestretch in June, BASS will visit America's second-largest river - the Mississippi River, out of Fort Madison, Iowa, on June 11-14 for the River Rumble. The Mighty Mississippi was host to a Bassmaster Tour event in 2006, when Elite angler Darrin Schwenkbeck won with a three-day total of 42 pounds, 12 ounces. The Mississippi has hosted more than 10 BASS events, but this will be its first Elite Series event. The Elite Series' newest venue, Big Bay de Noc and Little Bay de Noc, will host the July 23-26 Cold Water Clash out of Escanaba, Mich., about 430 miles north of Kalamazoo, home of two-time Bassmaster Classic champ Kevin VanDam. With more than 90,000 acres of water, the two bays are home to plentiful smallmouth bass.A return to Lake Champlain out of Plattsburgh, N.Y., means a return to the Canadian border for the Aug. 6-9 Empire Chase. In the 2007 season-ending event, Bassmaster Elite Series anglers caught 3,864 pounds of bass there. Timmy Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., won with 83 pounds, 10 ounces, nearly 13 pounds more than his closest competitor, eventual 2007 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif. Finally, the Elite Series travels a few ticks south to Syracuse, N.Y., to close the season at Oneida Lake with the Champion's Choice, Aug. 13-16. Oneida is the 11th-largest lake in the world by surface area, with 9,910 miles. The 51,000-acre lake, which will host a BASS event for the fourth consecutive year, once again will be where the 2009 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year is decided.2010In its fifth year, the Bassmaster Elite Series opens on the West Coast, home to several of the world's best bass pros, including 2007 Bassmaster Angler of the Year Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif. Up first is Stockton, Calif., and the California Delta, first visited by the Elite Series in 2007. The winner of the first Duel in the Delta was California native Aaron Martens, who now resides in Leeds, Ala., with 85 pounds, 12 ounces, Martens topped second-place finisher and eventual Rookie of the Year Derek Remitz by more than 6 pounds."We're continually looking to maintain our presence in the West," Ricks said. "The California Delta and Clear Lake provide excellent venues for the world's top professional anglers, and we're excited to be returning to both."From the Delta, the Elites will head to Lakeport for the Golden State Shootout on California's largest natural lake, Clear Lake, also believed to be one of the United States' oldest lakes. Clear Lake is home to a great concentration of lunker largemouth bass. In 2007, Steve Kennedy of Auburn, Ala., won the Shootout with 122 pounds, 14 ounces - an overall weight that stood for a little more than one year as a record for a four-day BASS tournament. The third tournament of 2010 will be the Battle on the Border on Lake Amistad out of Del Rio, Texas, followed by returns to Alabama's Pickwick Lake and Guntersville Lake for the fourth and fifth stops, respectively. The sixth tournament will be the Pride of Georgia at Clarks Hill Lake out of Evans, Ga., where the Elite pros made their latest stop in 2008. First-time Bassmaster Elite Series winner Kenyon Hill of Norman, Okla., topped the field with a four-day total of 68 pounds, 0 ounces. From Georgia, the Elite Series makes its way back to Kentucky Lake for the Tennessee Triumph out of Paris, Tenn., followed by the Sooner Run on the Arkansas River out of Muskogee, Okla., and the Empire Chase on New York's Lake Champlain out of Plattsburgh. Up next is a return to Lake Erie for the Champion's Choice, marking the seventh time BASS has visited Buffalo. Virginia's Smith Mountain Lake rounds out the 2010 schedule with the Blue Ridge Brawl out of Moneta. The full 2009 and 2010 schedule information, including host city, dates and fishery, can be found below and at Bassmaster.com, which also provides a list of the qualifying structure for the Bassmaster Classic and Bassmaster Elite Series.Sponsors of the Bassmaster Elite Series include Toyota Tundra, Advance Auto Parts, Berkley, Lowrance, Mercury, Purolator, Skeeter, Yamaha, Evan Williams Bourbon, Longhorn, OPTIMA Batteries, Triton Boats, Costa Del Mar, MotorGuide and Ramada Worldwide. 2009 Bassmaster Elite Series ScheduleDate Event Fishery Host City March 12-15 Battle on the Border Lake Amistad Del Rio, Texas March 26-29 Diamond Drive Lake Dardanelle Russellville, Ark.
ICAST Opens Doors, Rolls Out Products

As the American Sportfishing Association's ICAST opens its doors this morning in Las Vegas, this is shaping up to be a year where there is absolutely no shortage of new products to examine.Early last week, I received a couple of packages from Berkley that let me know they're certainly making their not-insignificant presence known this week. In the first package, what looks like a Christmas stocking full of various line offerings. "Line" really doesn't do it justice anymore. The idea of fishing line is almost as outdated as the party-line telephone. Today, lines are made of everything from braids (in case you're fishing and think you just might need to saw a dock brace in half or hoist a sunken freighter off the bottom) to polymer compound line that is nearly electric in the air and daylight, but disappears when submerged. I've spent the last week lusting over the package, but won't really have the first opportunity to re-spool all my reels and actually do some fishing with them. I'm especially looking forward to trying out Berkley's new Spider Wire Stealth Camo Braid - lt looks like it really would disappear on the bottom. It doesn't hurt that my neighbor Gerald Swindle says the Camo is great for flipping into bedding fish or "pressured fish".

You don't have to abandon your tried-and-true baits. Just give 'em a squirt of Gulp! And I know it's nothing Gerald would use in competition, but I'm also fired up at the idea of having an ultra-light line (Berkley's Trilene Micro Ice) that has the high-visibility color my presbyopic eyes need in order to see where I'm fishing micro sized lures. I'm also looking forward to trying some of their new Gulp! Baits in what chewing gum makers would call a "wide variety of flavors" from roe (singles and clusters)and fry sized to their grownup saltwater shrimp and even trout nuggets. If that's not enough to get me changed over, I have the option of using the Gulp Alive spray attractant in shrimp. Having seen the pros using the Gulp! Products to catch everything from big-buck bass to braggin' rights-sized catfish, it's no wonder the line is among the best-selling in the world. And there are other bait offerings aplenty, too. The world of swimbaits is one that has been going through one of those characteristically "hot" phases. It seems that what works seems tied to marketing and professional results, but there's no doubt that, at least in retail stores, hard baits are catching anglers.

An eight-inch trout swimbaitFish Harder is among the leaders in the swimbait world, and this ICAST they're offering a smaller swimbait in a four-inch variety (baby bass, bluegill, blueback herring, shad, chartreuse shad and yellow perch) and an eight-inch trout that's designed by pros Ish Monroe and Matt Newman. Those are all offered in fast/slow sink rates and removable tungsten weights to tune them to your surroundings. There's a wealth of other "stuff" being rolled out this week, and we'll be featuring products that have been selected best new products in their categories later this week. But we wanted to touch on one other idea that has kept us thinking about something that is actually more sobering than exciting: there is a continuing drive, world-wide, to remove lead from all outdoor product offerings. It's not news that sinker or ammo makers are all that excited about hearing, but it's a political reality that lead is under fire from health officials. Outdoor officials have traditionally been very understanding about the need to keep our sports affordable, but the health departments are famously intolerant. In fact, zero-tolerance might be the best description for their positions. In this morning's activities, one company seems to be taking advantage of that political reality - with a bit of a tongue-in-cheek attitude and a very practical eye to a product that, unlike tungsten and other high-tech products, isn't exactly something even health officials can criticize.Pallatrax, a European fishing company, is introducing the "Stonze" System. The "stonze" are exactly that, stones in a variety of sizes, all the way up to their "boulderz" for saltwater fishing. They're being positioned as a "green" alternative to lead sinkers, and come in both swivel and in-line versions.

Is it back to the 'stonz' age for anglers?OK, I admit I'm a sucker for great marketing concepts, but the idea of using a material that simply can't be the cause of environmental concern appeals to me.So, too, does the idea of getting onto the exhibition floor and seeing what else is out there. We'll keep you posted.
